MARGAO: The stage
is set for the first edition of the Goa Sevens Premier League (GSPL) as the two
Goan footballing giants –Dempo Sports Club and Churchill Brothers Football Club
lock horns in the season opener in their Group A clash, at the SAG ground,
Fatorda, on Sunday.
The five-times national champions –Dempo SC, who have opted
out of the I-League will be playing their first competitive tournament in front
of their fans in 2017 season.
Despite few players leaving the club, Dempo SC has fielded a
mix squad featuring talented youngsters and seasoned players –among the big
names –which includes former FC Goa player Joaquim Abranches, Beevan D’Mello,
Tyson Caido, Nickson Castanha and Mario Mascarenhas.
“We have a strong squad consisting of passionate youngsters
–Hayden, Kapil, Jason and Aaron –who are willing to make their mark. We just
have to give our best tomorrow to start the tournament on a positive note,”
said Dempo SC coach Samir Naik during the pre-match conference at Fatorda
Stadium.
Playing a complete different format in a competitive game,
Dempo SC coach Samir Naik felt that the first game would be a challenging one.
“It’s a new format for us to play professionally. Despite we
have been playing this format during the training, I feel it wont be that easy
as the matches will be more intense,” said Samir.
When asked about his goal in the GSPL, Samir instantly
replied, “Whichever tournament Dempo SC plays, we play to win the title.”
At the other end, Churchill Bros FC have fielded a
formidable side as their first team is preparing for the Federation Cup.
“Despite the situation, we have a decent squad for this
tournament,” said Churchill Bros coach Joao Rebello.
Former India international Clifford Miranda will lead the
Red Machines and coach Joao seems quite optimistic about the midfeilders
influence in the team.
“We have Clifford among our ranks and it’s definitely a plus
to have such experienced player in the team. We hope his experience will
influence the team,” Joao added.
On playing against Dempo SC, Joao said that it wont be a
easy fixture as both the teams will be looking for full points.
“We hope our players give their best tomorrow and play their
heart out and thrill the fans who will back us in the first match,” Joao
concluded.
The match will kick off at 7.30 p.m.
